TACLOBAN CITY – The National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Research Foundation Incorporated is exploring the jewels of the Biliran seawaters as it researches and identifies the seaweed species found in the area.

Headed by NRCP’s director, Dr. Paciente Cordero Jr., the project is a one-year assessment and profiling of the edible seaweeds in Biliran and is funded by United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). “The project started on November 2008 and I should practically finish it by the end of this month,” Cordero said during the Express It At The Park press conference.

The project hopes to discover the uses of the yet unknown seaweeds by profiling each one of them. When the complete report is done, Cordero hopes it to come out both scientific and “down-to-earth” report to be understood especially by the fisher folks. This way, encouraging the people to include seaweeds on their table would be easier. “Seaweeds are present on a typical Japanese breakfast… they are high in protein, low to almost zero in fat, and they have no cholesterol,” Cordero mentioned.

From the first six months of the data gathering, the NRCP identified 12 – 15 edible seaweed species. As the project goes on, the director hopes to discover new species under the Biliran seawaters.

Cordero’s upcoming project will focus more on the production side such as making homemade gelatins with no culturing needed. The project is said to start by January of 2010, after Cordero finalizes and submits the proposal to Department of Science and Technology (DOST). (Shiena Rose Castillano, LNU Intern)
