Tacloban City – The Commission on Elections has extended the filing of certificates of candidacy for the May 10, 2010 elections by one more day, December 1 instead of November 30.

The extension of the deadline for filing is to avoid possible confusion that may arise because of the holiday on November 30 which is a regular non-working holiday in honor of hero Andres Bonifacio.

The Comelec, in a statement, said that the filing of certificates of candidacy will start on November 20 and the deadline for the filing is at midnight of December 1.

The Comelec gave the assurance that the Comelec offices all over the country are open even during holidays to serve those the would be candidates who are filing their certificates of candidacy.

“Our deadline for the filing of application for candidacy is November 30, which is a holiday. So from November 20, we will be open for the filing of application of candidacy regardless whether it’s a Saturday or a holiday including those holidays in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao,” Comelec Chairman Jose Melo said.

This deadline is for the filing of candidacies in all the positions at stake in the 2010 elections, from the position of the President, Vice President, Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Vice Governors, Provincial Board Members, Mayors, Vice Mayors, and Councilors.

The Comelec said that it is Melo said the Commission is expecting a great number of candidates next year since it will be a national election.

It would be recalled that a total of 68,000 candidates ran in the May 2004 elections while some 46,000 aspirants filed their certificates of candidacy in the 2007 elections.

The Comelec also called on those concerned to take note and not to wait the deadline in filing their certificates of candidacy in order to avoid unnecessary stress and discomforts. (PIA 8 – Tacloban City)
