Naval, Biliran (2 February) – The National Statistics Office (NSO) here in Biliran province provided the first of its kind public service as the office offers a simultaneous free birth registration to all senior citizens.

According to Rose Marie V. Lumbre, Provincial Statistics Officer of NSO-Biliran, the conduct of the free birth registration to all senior citizens on February 16, 2010 is one of the activities lined up to highlight the celebration of February as Civil Registration Month in coordination with the Association of Biliran Civil Registry Personnel (ABCRP).

NSO-Biliran and ABCRP will also extend free registration for all ages in the municipalities of Caibiran, Biliran, Maripipi and Kawayan on February 16, Lumbre informed.

Lumbre said that the observance of February in every year as Civil Registration Month is pursuant to Proclamation No. 682 issued on January 28, 1991 by then President Corazon C. Aquino.

The chief of NSO-Biliran added that they see some problems like in claiming of benefits and siblings going abroad of senior citizens where birth registration is one of the needed documents.

She advised also the senior citizens who wanted to avail of the free service to bring any documents that will prove facts of birth like previous employment record or baptismal document.

Lumbre likewise revealed that their office will conduct other activities like the free issuance of birth documents on February 18 in all the eight municipalities in the province; provincial civil registration quiz on February 19 where the champion will represent the province of Biliran at the Regional Finals on February 26, 2010 in Tacloban City and mass weddings.

The month-long activity of NSO-Biliran started with a caravan of the Local Civil Registrars on February 1 to the different Local Civil Registry Offices to evaluate their compliance to the Civil Registration Law and the Local Government Code, the NSO chief informed.

This year’s celebration is focused on the theme “Wastong Rehistro: Lahat Panalo”, Lumbre added.(PIA-Biliran)
