NAVAL, Biliran – The Biliran Medical Society (BMS), an organization of medical professionals in the province of Biliran strongly supports the passage of the Smoke-Free Ordinance of the local government unit (LGU) of Naval.
This was manifested in the anti-smoking two-kilometer fun run sponsored recently by the said organization around poblacion Naval.
According to Dr. Dusman Oliver, a member of BMS and focal person of the fun run, the activity was conducted mainly to raise the awareness level of the general public especially those who actually smoke, that smoking does not bring any good to one’s health, aside from the hazard it gives to people who are able to inhale second smoke.
He said, the two-kilomter fun run on anti-smoking that the BMS initiated was just the beginning of more activities their organization will conduct to urge smokers to quit smoking.
For his part, Dr. Gabino Velasquez IV, Naval Sangguniang Bayan (SB) Member, a member of BMS and main sponsor of the smoke-free ordinance said that since the day the ordinance was signed by Mayor Susan Parilla and implemented in Naval town and its barangays, there was a noted decrease of smokers smoking in public places of the municipality.
He informed that the enforcement task force on anti-smoking has started removing on March 1, 201, advertisements on cigarettes and other tobacco products in big stores, sari-sari stores, public places and other areas frequented by people in Naval. (PIA-Biliran)
