NAVAL, Biliran – The island province of Biliran through the Biliran Provincial Health Office is all set to launch the celebration of July as Nutrition Month.
This was learned from Dr. Alfonso Veneracion, Provincial Health Officer (PHO) of Biliran in a mobile phone interview today.
He said, as a kick off activity for the month-long celebrationm there will be a motorcade around poblacion Naval on Monday, July 4 at 8:00 o’clock in the in the morning.
He said, in the municipality of Naval, the activitie line-up for the occasion will be jointly undertaken by the Naval Municipal Nutrition Council (MNC) and the Biliran Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC).
He added that the motorcade will be participated in by the officials and employees of the national government agencies (NGAs) based in Naval, provincial government and other organizations.
Furthermore, he said that this year’s observance of Nutrition Month, breastfeeding will take center stage among all other activities in connection with the occasion.
”Isulong ang Breastfeeding – Tama, Sapat at EKSklusibo”, which is the theme of the celebration, focuses on the key messages to ensure successful breastfeeding practices.
The theme supports the Department of Health’s campaign on communication for behavioral impact on breastfeeding which is “Breastfeeding TSEK (Tama, Sapat at EKSklusibo)”.
This year’s objective of the Nutrition Month celebration is to encourage all sectors of society to help promote, protect and support correct breastfeeding practices.
Dr. Veneracion said that part of the activities to highlight the celebration is the conduct of a series of lectures on breastfeeding in the barangays through mother’s classes through the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS).
He added that babies who are breastfed since birth up to two years old are protected against infection such as diarrhea, pneumonia, ear infection and other illnesses.
Likewise, breastfeeding enhances the intelligence of children.
