Ordinance to increase benefits of health workers on final reading

NAVAL, Biliran, May 20 (PIA) — “Municipal Ordinace No. 19-2012 otherwise known as ‘The Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) Benefits and Incentives Ordinance of the Municipality of Naval’ is now in its third and final reading,” said Dr. Gabby Velasquez, a doctor by profession, member of the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of Naval, and sponsor of the said ordinance in an interview.
He said, once approved for final reading, the municipal ordinance which seeks to increase the benefits and incentives of the BHWs of the municipality of Naval will be subjected for further study by members of the Committee on Health of the Naval SB before it is finally approved by Mayor Susan Parilla.
Dr. Velasquez said that it is really necessary to increase the benefits and incentives of the BHWs considering their important role in assisting municipal health workers implement the various health programs and activities in the barangays of Naval town.
It was learned that just recently, Municipal Ordinance No. 19-2012 was presented for comments and corrections in a public hearing which was attended by the barangay captains and officials or their representatives of the 26 barangays of Naval, BHWs, Department of Health (DOH) representative of Biliran, official from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) of Naval and officials of concerned national government agencies (NGAs) based in Naval.
Prior to the open forum during the public hearing, SB Member Velasquez made a brief presentation of municipal ordinance no. 19-2012 and this was followed by the presentation of Ms. Marlina Cordero, DOH representative of Biliran on the importance of the municipal ordinance, nature of appointment and the importance of registration and accreditation of BHWs.
Once approved, the ordinance will inspire more the BHWs of Naval to work more in helping the municipal health workers carry out health activities in the barangays of Naval town. (fej/PIA 8, Biliran)
