NAVAL, Biliran –The Department of Agriculture will soon establish a corn mill in the municipality of Cabucgayan in Biliran province where corn is one staple food of the constituents.
This will be materialized very soon after Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala ordered Antonio Gerundio, regional executive director of the Department of Agriculture regional field unit in Eastern Visayas to put up a corn mill in the municipality.
The order of the agriculture secretary was made impromptu infront of some 500 farmers and fisherfolks in Biliran province who attended a forum held at the Nipa Hut at the provincial capitol grounds during his visit in Biliran province on May 31.
Alcala learned that the municipality of Cabucgayan is a corn producing municipality and that what hinders the improvement of corn production of the town is the absence of a corn mill.
He further learned that the milling of corn to produce corn grits is done outside the municipality where it entails additional financial burden to corn farmers in the municipality.
The agri chief also told Gerundio to provide the corn farmers in the municipality of Cabucgayan a corn variety called “tinigib”, a special variety of corn.
The establishment of a corn mill and the provisions of special corn variety in the municipality are expected to boost the corn production of the municipality, he added.
Meanwhile, Secretary Alcala gave Biliran farmers and fisherfolks some agricultural goodies through a raffle to include 3 units rice threshers, 3 units hand tractors with trailers, 25 units net fish traps, 5 units marine engine, 5 heads Anglo-Nubian goats, 5 boxes sweet corn seeds, 1,000 bags certified rice seeds, 200 planting materials, 5 basket assorted vegetable seeds and 5 carabaos with farm implements.
