Pupils in 14 elementary schools of naval town participate in cookfest

NAVAL, Biliran – Pupils from 14 elementary schools in the north and south school districts of the municipality of Naval, Biliran participated in the cookfest held on Wednesday, July 18 at the Naval municipal grounds.
Sponsored by the local government unit (LGU) of Naval through the Municipal Nutrition Council (MNC), the activity was conducted in line with the celebration of July as Nutrition Month.
As early as 8:00 o’clock in the morning, the pupil-participants have already set up their working tables where preparation of everything they need like cookwares, stoves, vegetables and ingredients will be done.
The cookfest started at exactly nine o’clock in the morning with the classmates of the contestants, teachers, officials and members of the MNC, parents, and the officials and employees of LGU-Naval led by Mayor Susan Parilla eagerly watching the contestants from the elementary grades prepare low-cost recipes with focus on green leafy and yellow vegetables.
The recipes prepared by the contestants included fried kangkong with relish; mongo and other leafy vegetables with fish cooked in coconut milk; “pinakbet” (sautéed mixture of ampalaya, okra, squash, eggplant, malunggay leaves, young leaves of squash and ampalaya and other vegetables with shrimps) and boiled varieties of leafy green vegetables among others.
The criteria of the cooking contest were focused on the nutritive value of the recipe – 40%; food selection which included freshness, low-cost and availability of ingredients – 15%; palatability – 5%; variety and creativity (uniqueness and initiative of making own menu) – 10%; organization and time management – 10% and neatness in preparation, appearance and presentation of the food -20% or a total of 100%.
First prize of the cooking contest went to the Naval SPED Center with 93%; second prize – Naval Central School with 88%; and third prize went to Sabang Elementary School with 85%.
The winners received a cash prize of P2,000.00; P1,500.00 and P1,000.00 respectively.
All participating schools that did not make it to the three major prizes received a consolation prize of P500 each.
The first prize winner will represent the municipality of Naval in the cookfest at the provincial level to be held before the end of the Nutrition Month celebration by the Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC).
The activity was centered on the theme of the celebration which is “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain!”. (PIA Biliran)
